At the end of July, a group of bakers, apprentices and bakery students travelled to the Akademie Deutsches Bäckerhandwerk Weinheim to learn about the German baking culture. Under the tuition of two excellent teachers; Wolfgang Furtner and Hamish Morrin; they had an opportunity to bake some of the most iconic products in the German Bakery market.
Kaiser rolls, rye rolls, Pretzels, seedy bread, Berliner doughnuts, Bee Sting and Butter cake were among the delicious bakery items they prepared. The group experienced doughs, ingredients and machinery that they had not seen before and they were given a chance to try new mixing and moulding techniques.
It was a great experience for everyone, and stunning products weren’t the only thing they made. New friendships and lasting professional contacts were forged that will stand them in good stead going forward.
With grateful thanks to the team at the Akademie Weinheim for their expertise and hospitality, and to Court Assistant Sara Autton for her tireless work in bringing the course to fruition.
