The Master describes his day out:

The Master's Day out this year was held at the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex. The group met at the new Art Foundation which was opened very recently, at the end of May.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit charity which has three pillars underpinning all that they do, Art, Education and Environment. The recent investment of over £20m was spent on new buildings, the refurbishing of older buildings and the landscaping of 70 acres.

The group was greeted by the Art Director Richard Grindy who gave a talk about the Foundation’s evolution and about the contemporary art, showcased throughout by Dan Pearson’s landscapes which are designed to cycle through 24 seasonal moments each year.

The featured artist for this season is Rachel Whiteread and in the gallery Richard described her photographs and the two major exhibits. Next came a walk around the east side of the Estate, guided by Grace who explained the various sculptures encountered along the way.
Rachel Whiteread’s sculptures are best known for her innovative use of casting to give form to negative space. Often these would be the outside of buildings which she makes into sculptures.

The group were fascinated by these and came to appreciate the skill and imagination, some struggled a bit with the sculptures of pineapples but most enjoyed the rest, including the unexpected ethereal singing in part of the woodland.

After the walk we went for a most delicious lunch in Café 24  which features a lot of the produce from the estate. Afterwards the Group split; to depart, or to continue to walk around the gardens, or to go to the motor circuit.

We were blessed with good weather, mostly sunny and a perfect temperature for walking.

The whole group really enjoyed their day out and most expressed an interest in going back and introducing the Foundation to others.
