City Harvest London, with their mission to rescue surplus food, and use it to feed the hungry, is a cause close to the hearts of many Livery Companies, including the Bakers. Each day more than 15,000 meals are distributed to causes across the capital, in an attempt to combat the current frightening statistic of a quarter of Londoners being unable to eat as often as they would like to.
Yesterday, members of the Company from the Master Peter Baker to some of our Young Bakers, headed to City Harvest's Acton Depot for a day volunteering. Liveryman Richard Burrell headed off with one of the infamous vans, collecting and making deliveries across London. In the warehouse, our team sorted all manner of fresh produce in the morning, then collated 'pantry' crates in the afternoon. The products packed will already have been distributed to food banks, community projects, hostels, soup kitchens and more.
Making an extraordinarily complicated logistics operation look easy, it was a real pleasure to meet CEO Sarah Calcutt, hear about her vision for the future, and work alongside her impressive team of staff and volunteers.
