The Worshipful Company of Bakers is one of a handful of Livery Companies still firmly rooted in its original trade, continuing to promote excellence in baking, and baking training and education.
Last week the Master Peter Baker and Clerk joined Freeman Cristiana Solinas and final year students from LSBU National Bakery School for a fascinating visit to The Bread Factory, which serves the highly successful high street artisan bakery chain Gail's. During the day, the students heard about the many possible career paths at Gail's, before getting the chance to tour the factory with Head of Production, Cyril Denecheau.
As much as possible at The Bread Factory is done by hand, at a speed and proficiency that has to be seen to be believed. One brave student, Wendy Peacock, tried her hand at shaping a loaf on the production line, ably demonstrating the skills acquired during her studies.
After the tour, our Freeman Doug Beaney, Senior Bread Developer & Baking Lead, led the group on a guided tasting of a variety of breads, giving valuable insights into the ongoing mission to make their breads as nutritious as possible. Doug was himself a former Top Student of the NBS, showing today's students where their careers may lead them.
Opportunities to assist young bakers to find their next steps in the trade are very valuable for the Company.
Thanks are extended to all at The Bread Factory for their warm welcome and profusion of information.
