Filling the school holidays can be a challenging time for parents. Happily, there are many excellent projects out there...
Challengers strives to transform the lives of disabled children, young people and their families through the power of play. Chef Sophie provides inclusive cooking sessions for the children and young people who attend Challengers’ services.
Working with Challengers this summer, our Benevolent Fund has supported 30 children through Chef Sophie inclusive baking sessions.
Chef Sophie ensures sessions are accessible for all children and young people by adapting them to meet individual need. Sessions have a large sensory element, and children and young people are encouraged to engage their senses by tasting, touching and smelling the ingredients. The baked goods are made collaboratively, and children and young people are provided with a recipe card so they can re-create them at home.
Our Upper Warden Alison Springett visited their Richmond Play Scheme to experience the sessions first hand:
"Chef Sophie is brilliant – no wonder she is such a hit with the children. Their sense of achievement making, and then eating their jam twists, was wonderful."
As well as baking, Alison also had the chance to dance and play hide and seek. It sounds like the perfect holiday activity to us!
